FEATURED PROJECT:
Social Security System Development for Andean Women

Andean WomenProject Type: International, Social Justice, Gender Equality
Location: Peru, Bolivia

Description:
The textile workers of Bolivia and Peru are among the hardest working and least paid women in the Americas.  In the low oxygen environments of elevations ranging from 3500-5000m women hike long distances, regularly with a small child on their back, in order to sell their handicrafts.

With no regular daily income these women and their families live subsistence existences and thus accumulate very little savings.

As their respective governments are unable or unwilling to provide any sort of social security system these women are often resigned to working until the end of their lives.
This project hopes to provide access to new markets for the goods produced by these women.

In addition this project will attempt to establish the beginnings of some social security for these women as to alleviate some uncertainty as they grow older.

Method:
Fundraising will be carried out through the sale of Peruvian alpaca scarves.  These beautiful scarves are made with alpaca wool fibres which makes them very soft, smooth and of high integrity.
